‘Cristiano Ronaldo should have retired’ – Platini baffled by Juventus move

Former UEFA president and triple Ballon d’Or winner Michel Platini believes Cristiano Ronaldo should have retired, rather than moving to Juventus

After spending nine years with Los Blancos, scoring an incredible 450 goals in 438 games and securing four Champions League titles, Ronaldo switched to the Serie A champions in a deal reportedly worth over £100m.

The move sparked hysteria among Juventus fans and many claim it will revitalise the Italian league.

However, Platini, who scored 209 goals in 358 games for the Old Lady in his playing days, believes the 33-year-old has made the wrong decision, with the move striking him as ‘odd’.

He told L’Equipe (via Goal): “I think it’s odd that at 33 years of age he’s left ‘his’ Real Madrid, with whom he has won three Champions Leagues in a row, to try a new adventure.

“When I was 32 lots of teams wanted me, but I retired because I was tired.”

Shortly after helping Real Madrid win a fourth Champions League title in five years at the end of last season, Ronaldo had hinted at an exit from the Spanish capital – although few took his claims seriously given how prolific a season he had just enjoyed.

But the move did indeed happen, although Platini is unsure if it was Juventus who instigated the move in the first place.

He added: “I can’t understand the move.

“I do not know if Juventus has contacted him or if it was Mendes who offered him, I cannot understand this operation.”

Although Ronaldo has been unable to score in his first two outings for Juve, he did manage to register his first assist in their most recent game – a 2-0 win over Lazio.

And his lack of goals hasn’t been for the want of trying with Ronaldo already firing 14 shots across his first two games.

He will have the chance to finally open his Juve account when they travel to Parma on Saturday.
