Alvaro Morata says Antonio Conte’s tactics made him “suffer” at Chelsea

Alvaro Morata has blamed his struggles during his first season at Chelsea on Antonio Conte’s tactics.

The Spaniard made a clinical start to life at Stamford Bridge but his form soon tailed off, finishing the 2017/18 campaign with just 11 Premier League goals.

Chelsea ended up finishing fifth, while the likes of Tottenham and Liverpool qualified for the Champions League, thanks in no small part to the contributions of their main goal scorers, Harry Kane and Mohamed Salah.

As a result, Morata took some of the blame for Chelsea’s failure to finish in the top four.

But the striker claims Conte’s style of play was the reason for his lack of goals, telling Cadena SER he is more comfortable with new manager Maurizio Sarri’s tactics.

“It wasn’t my style of play [last season] and I suffered a little because of that,” Morata said (via Goal).

“In today’s world, it’s normal that these [critical] things are said. Chelsea made a huge effort for me and it wasn’t returned. I should have repaid them double. A player they pay for can’t finish the season with 15 goals.

“People think we’re machines. If I had stopped for three months, I would have come back with a clear head, but I was professional and I wanted to give everything.

“If I could go back, I would stop for two months. I was in pain, I went to Germany to see the doctor, paying for private planes. People believe the false life of Instagram, what it shows you; they thought I was at home with my wife. Someday, I’ll write a book about what I’ve been through.”

Reports in Italy linked Morata with a return to Juventus over the summer but Chelsea ended up keeping faith in the 25-year-old, while Conte was axed.

The Blues have made a perfect start to the new season, winning each of their four matches – although Morata has scored just once.

Chelsea face Cardiff City at Stamford Bridge this weekend.
