FIFA 19 is very nearly upon us, with EA Sports having already revealed the best 90 of the top 100 players on the game.
We expect them to reveal at least some of the top 10 on Wednesday.
But why wait? We’ve had a go at predicting the top 10 already. There are several tricky calls that EA would have had to make here.
Who takes top spot? What ratings do Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi deserve after their 2017/18 campaigns with their clubs and their form at the World Cup?
Here’s our predicted top 10.
10. Luis Suarez
FIFA 18 rating: 92
Predicted FIFA 19 rating: 90
Predicted highest attribute: 89 shooting
Suarez netted 25 goals in 33 La Liga appearances last season, but managed just one goal in 10 Champions League outings. He was ranked the fourth-best player on FIFA 18, but we see the Uruguayan striker dropping slightly this season.
The Barcelona forward is now 31 and while we still expect him to have a typically excellent season, we think there are some players who may have pipped him to a higher spot in the rankings this year. Having said that, a card with 89 shooting and 84 dribbling would still make Suarez a very fun striker to use on FIFA 19.
9. Toni Kroos
FIFA 18 rating: 90
Predicted FIFA 19 rating: 90
Predicted highest attribute: 89 passing
We expect Kroos to get another solid card this year and think his rating is likely to stay the same. The German was integral in Real Madrid’s excellent Champions League campaign last season and, if there were any Germany players to emerge from the World Cup in a positive light, Kroos was probably one of them.
The former Bayern man was also ranked as the ninth-best player in last season’s game. We’d say he deserves a better shooting rating than 81 and we’ve also pushed his defending up from 73 to 75. A must-have midfielder.
8. Eden Hazard
FIFA 18 rating: 90
Predicted FIFA 19 rating: 91
Predicted highest attribute: 94 dribbling
Hazard is always one of the best attacking players on the game and we think he’ll be better than ever this season. Chelsea will be delighted to have kept hold of him and he may well be set for his best campaign yet under Maurizio Sarri.
We’ve pushed his dribbling rating up from 92 to 94 and see him being one of the most sought-after attacking players on the game this year.
7. Kevin De Bruyne
FIFA 18 rating: 89
Predicted FIFA 19 rating: 91
Predicted highest attribute: 90 passing
De Bruyne could be set for one of the best all-round cards on the game. We think he’ll be a new entry into the top 10 this season, having been ranked as the 15th-best player on FIFA 18.
We’re also anticipating a positional change for the City man, from a CAM to CM, after the Belgian played most of his football as a number 8 in Pep Guardiola’s 4-3-3 system last year, being pivotal to Manchester City’s Premier League title win.
6. David De Gea
FIFA 18 rating: 90
Predicted FIFA 19 rating: 91
Predicted highest attribute: 93 reflexes
We think De Gea will be the highest-rated goalkeeper on FIFA 19, with EA Sports having already revealed Manuel Neuer as the 12th-best player on the game with a 90 rating, despite an injury-plagued 2017/18 campaign.
The Spaniard would be another new entry to the top 10 having been ranked as the 11th-best player on FIFA 18.
5. Sergio Ramos
FIFA 18 rating: 90
Predicted FIFA 19 rating: 91
Predicted highest attribute: 90 defending
Ramos’ 2017/18 season was possibly his best yet. We’d say it was definitely his most-talked-about after the events of the Champions League final.
The facts are that Ramos just knows how to win football matches and knows how to win trophies. For that reason, we’ve upped his overall rating from 90 to 91 and have him down as the best centre-back on FIFA 19.
4. Luka Modric
FIFA 18 rating: 89
Predicted FIFA 19 rating: 91
Predicted highest attribute: 90 passing/90 dribbling
Modric’s superb 2017/18 campaign should definitely see him break into the top 5 players on FIFA this season. He played a vital part in yet another Champions League title-winning season, led his country to a World Cup final and was recently awarded the UEFA Men’s Player of the Year award.
The Croatian was rated as the 12th-best player on FIFA 18. This card would see all of his stats from his initial card on last year’s game increase dramatically, but he definitely deserves it.
3. Neymar
FIFA 18 rating: 92
Predicted FIFA 19 rating: 92
Predicted highest attribute: 95 dribbling
Neymar’s first season at Paris Saint-Germain didn’t go as well as it could have – albeit down to injury – and neither did his World Cup campaign with Brazil, but he’s definitely still one of the top three players in world football.
This card would be very similar to his initial one on FIFA 18, but we’re expecting big things from him in his second season in Paris.
2. Lionel Messi
FIFA 18 rating: 93
Predicted FIFA 19 rating: 94
Predicted highest attribute: 96 dribbling
Many have tipped Messi for a downgrade this year but we see him going in the opposite direction. This is a player who still managed 45 goals in 54 appearances last season.
We can see all of his stats going up. FIFA 19 Messi could be one of the most exciting Messis to ever feature on the game.
1. Cristiano Ronaldo
FIFA 18 rating: 94
Predicted FIFA 19 rating: 94
Predicted highest attribute: 93 shooting
The ultimate FIFA striker. Ronaldo may have had a fairly subdued start to life at Juventus but we’re in no doubt that he will settle.
His impressive form at the World Cup will have helped his chances of taking top spot in this years rankings, but we’re not sure that was ever actually in doubt. Ronaldo is the face of the game again this year. His positional change from LW to ST is likely to change the way players use him and could make him more lethal than ever.
