Bale: Anger inspired Champions League final brace

Gareth Bale has revealed the secret behind his Champions League final brace was ‘anger’.

The former Tottenham and Southampton forward was left out of the starting lineup for the final despite his good form toward the end of the season.

The Welsh international has admitted that he did not take well to the news that he would not be starting the game in Kiev.

Bale would come off the bench to score a brace including a sensational overhead kick as Los Blancos ran out 3-1 winners over Liverpool.

“I was angry, very angry, to be honest,” Bale is cited as saying by Marca when asked about the goals.

“I felt that I deserved to start the game, I had been scoring goals, so it was hard to let go of the anger, and my anger prepared me for that goal.”

After the final, Bale suggested that he may look to leave Real Madrid in the summer transfer window in search of regular football.

But Cristiano Ronaldo’s departure to Juventus should see the former Spurs man given more opportunities this season.

“Ronaldo gone? Obviously, it’s going to be a little different than having such a big player. Maybe it’s going to be a little more relaxed,” Bale said.

“I guess there will be more emphasis of a team and towards working more as a unit rather than as a single player.”

The forward is entering his sixth season in Spain having joined from Tottenham during the summer of 2013 and has scored 73 La Liga goals in 130 appearances since his arrival.

Bale seems to be getting more game time under new manager Julen Loptegui this season, already scoring and assisting three goals in his first five games of the season.

This comes after an impressive campaign last term that saw the former Spurs man net 16 times in 26 top-flight games.

The Welshman has also admitted that Loptegui’s ability to speak English will help him this season, with the Spaniard more fluent in Bale’s native language than his predecessor Zinedine Zidane.

“Is Loptegui a better Coach than Zidane? I don’t think I should answer that but obviously his speaking English helps. I can speak in Spanish, but I cannot go into the detail that I always need.”

Real Madrid take on Roma on Wednesday as they begin their Champions League title defence.
