Dele Alli should be fit to face Liverpool, says Southgate

Gareth Southgate has revealed Dele Alli should recover from a muscle strain in time to play for Tottenham against Liverpool this weekend.

Alli was ruled out of England’s friendly against Switzerland at the King Power Stadium on Tuesday after suffering a slight strain in Saturday’s 2-1 UEFA Nations League defeat to Spain.

The Spurs midfielder, who was last on the scoresheet for the Three Lions in the World Cup quarter-finals against Sweden, played the full 90 minutes at Wembley.

But despite picking up an injury, Alli should return for Tottenham’s crucial game against Liverpool on Saturday, according to Southgate.

“Alli has just had a minor strain and should be fine for his club at the weekend I would think,” Southgate said, according to Sky Sports.

The England manager also revealed he was pleased with Alli’s performance against Spain.

He said: “I thought his performance was good, in terms of his retention of the ball I thought he was improved in that area, his work without the ball has been good over the last six months with us.

“He makes critical forward runs, like everybody else we learned a lot from the game.”

Alli has endured a mixed start to the season with Spurs, scoring against Newcastle United on the opening weekend but failing to find the net in any of his last three club appearances.

The 22-year-old scored Tottenham’s third goal in their 4-1 league victory over Liverpool at Wembley last season and will be hoping for a similar outcome on Saturday as Spurs look to bounce back from their defeat to Watford.
