Kane is suffering from a lack of rest, says Klopp

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp believes Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane‘s slow start to the season is down to fatigue.

Despite ending his drought of not scoring in August this season, Kane has managed just two goals in his opening five games this season – failing to make an impact in Spurs’ two defeats against Watford and Liverpool.

Kane played a big role in England’s run to the World Cup semi-finals in the summer, winning the Golden Boot with six goals, and started for Spurs in their first game of the season just four weeks after the third-place play off against Belgium.

And Klopp believes this has played a big part in Kane’s subpar start to the season, with the Spurs man lacking rest.

“We all knew it after the World Cup, especially after England came that far, they have had no rest,” he told Sky Sports News in the build up to Liverpool’s game against Spurs (via ITV).

“Harry played from the first match on, so maybe he had two weeks holiday – that is nothing.

“He is a physical worker, he uses his body every day. He cannot get a rest match-wise but he will find his form and maybe at the weekend.”

Klopp also went on to say with the increase in international football, and introduction of Uefa Nations League, too much is being asked of players today.

“A good pre-season should be at least three or four weeks,” he added.

“That is how it is, the body needs the time only to calm down from an intense season – they didn’t have it.

“We ask too much from the players, we constantly want them ready and if they are not we are not happy. It is a weird situation.

“Now with the Nations League, international managers cannot rest players because it is a proper competition. It is a constant challenge for all of us, we will deal with it and it will never be perfect.”

Liverpool beat Tottenham 2-1 on Saturday afternoon to extend their perfect start to the new season, with five wins from five.

The Reds are currently second in the Premier League, behind Chelsea on goal difference with the Blues also winning their opening five matches.

Kane’s start to the season

So far this season, Kane has played the full 90 minutes in three of Spurs’ matches, while being subbed off after 89 minutes in the other two.

As a result, the English striker has barely been given time to rest, despite not looking himself on the pitch.

In his five games, Kane has managed just 10 shots at an average of 2.01 per 90 minutes, with only four hitting the target.

Last season as a whole, the striker averaged 3.97 shots per 90, higher than any other player to play more than 20 minutes.
