Man Utd defender Eric Bailly hits back at “disrespectful” Graeme Souness

Manchester United defender Eric Bailly has hit back at Graeme Souness after the ex-Liverpool defender said Bailly didn’t know “if he’s in New York or New Year” during United’s 3-2 defeat at Brighton.

United had a torrid time at the Amex Stadium last week, with Bailly coming in for heavy criticism from pundits up and down the country.

However, Souness’ comments have irked the Ivorian, with Bailly saying he can take criticism as long as it is constructive.

Bailly said (via the Mirror): What Graeme Souness said was a little bit disrespectful because it became so personal and it’s not the sort of criticism that can help a young player improve and become a better player.”

Former Manchester United defender, and Sky Sports pundit, Gary Neville was also very critical of Bailly, as well as central defensive partner Victor Lindelof, saying that the pair do not look like a title-winning partnership.

Bailly has been equally defensive about those comments, adding: “I think the criticism was a bit harsh, particularly from people who have played the game and have probably made mistakes themselves during their career.

“As young players, we need support from these people. If we got more support from these people, that can help us. But negative comments all of the time doesn’t help the young players or the team.

“It was not just one individual performance on Sunday. It was the whole team that struggled. But it was just one battle lost, not the whole war.

“But it’s one game. We cannot forget that. We shouldn’t just focus on the negative, build on the positive and starting with Tottenham on Monday.”

Bailly’s United career so far

Since joining Manchester United from Villarreal in 2016, Eric Bailly has made 58 appearances for the Red Devils across all competitions, winning a League Cup and the Europa League in the process.

The 30-time Ivory Coast international has generally been viewed as a success at Old Trafford. Bailly was part of seven Premier League clean sheets last season despite only managing 13 appearances due to injuries.

However, the former Villareal man has found it tough in the opening stages of this season and has been on the end of a large amount of criticism.

Bailly, should he start, will have the chance to put that right when United face Tottenham at Old Trafford on Monday.
