Kovacic admits watching Man Utd legend Paul Scholes on YouTube to develop his game

Mateo Kovacic has revealed he studies YouTube clips of Manchester United legend Paul Scholes to get better.

The 24-year-old Croatian international is presently enjoying a season-loan loan at Chelsea from 13-time European champions Real Madrid.

Nominally a controlling midfielder, Kovacic understandably looks to those who thrived in his position, with Scholes being his greatest influence.

“Every player has to be himself – but for me Scholes was one of the best ever,” he told The Sun.

“He was amazing. I still enjoy watching his videos on YouTube. Sometimes I go home and watch him to learn something new.

“He had everything, he was the modern midfielder – scoring goals, defending well, tackling. I don’t copy anybody but I do like to watch Scholes. I also watch other players to see what I can do better.

“Players like Luka Modric and Andres Iniesta, too.”

Paul Scholes, who spent his entire career at Man United, scored 155 goals in 20 seasons with the Red Devils.

Collection 11 Premier League titles along the way, Kovacic’s idol fell one appearance short of 500 in the English top-flight, scoring 107 goals and providing 55 assists.

Scholes was also the most-booked player in Champions League history until Wednesday evening. Sergio Ramos picked up the 37th yellow card during Real Madrid’s 3-0 win against Roma, overtaking the fiery England midfielder in the process.

The lowdown on Mateo

Kovacic, who is able to play in front of the defence or close to the centre-forward, hails from the famous Dinamo Zagreb talent factory.

Inter Milan were the first big club to secure his signature, handing him Wesley Sneijder’s No.10 shirt after a €15m deal was agreed in January 2013.

The Croatian then joined Los Blancos from the Serie A side for a reported £26.35m in August 2015.

He’s since gone on to make 109 appearances, registering three goals and eight assists, whilst in the process reaffirming the belief he is indeed his compatriot and ex-Spurs man Luka Modric’s long-term successor.

Since relocating to west London this summer Kovacic has featured in all but one of Chelsea’s opening five Premier League fixtures starting three of those in the process.
