New Liverpool midfielder Naby Keita has revealed former Reds star Xabi Alonso is the toughest opponent he has ever faced in his career to date.
Keita made the switch to Anfield this summer, moving from RB Leipzig for a transfer fee of £48 million as Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp tries to turn his side into real title contenders.
He has so far played in all four of Liverpool’s Premier League fixtures this season which has seen them get off to a perfect start to put them at the top of the table.
Speaking to Liverpool’s official website, Keita was answering questions sent in from club supporters. When asked who was the toughest opponent he has faced in football, there was only one man the new Reds star could name.
“When I used to play against Bayern, Xabi Alonso always used to give me a really hard time,” he said.
“He was so experienced, he made me suffer. The way he’d keep switching play just meant that you could never stop running.
“He was very intelligent.”
Former Liverpool midfielder Alonso is thought of by many as one of the most naturally talented centre-midfielders the Premier League has ever seen.
The Spaniard won a whole host of personal and team titles including the Champions League, FA Cup, FA Community Shield and UEFA Super Cup, all within his time in England.
If Liverpool fans think of Keita in the same regard as they do Alonso by the time the midfielder leaves the Merseyside club, then we will know the Guinean has done something special in his tenure at the club.
