Real Madrid forms Spain’s base, claims Luis Enrique

Spain manager Luis Enrique has revealed while Real Madrid form the base of his side, he does not keep track of which teams provide the most players.

La Roja moved on from a poor showing at the World Cup this summer with two wins in the Uefa Nations League, the first games under new Spain boss Enrique.

First came a well-worked 2-1 win over England at Wembley but Spain truly showed their dominance by beating World Cup runners-up Croatia 6-0 to take control of their Uefa Nations League group.

The squads for the two matches featured six Real Madrid players, but Enrique has insisted he does not care where his players come from.

“It doesn’t make sense to compare national teams and club sides,” Enrique said, via Football Espana.

“We have our idea of playing football and today everything went wonderfully. We started with some doubts, but after that we were brilliant and scored some incredible goals.

“We were very effective. We want to get back to how good we were before. What I’ve liked most in these 10 days is the attitude of the players.

“From what I’ve seen, regardless of the results, I’m delighted. When I hear my name sung, I feel proud, but it’s the players who deserve it. Still, I appreciate it.

“There are many things to improve on. Everything can change in a day. I’m not one of those who exaggerate in victory or martyr in defeat.

“I’m looking for balance. I didn’t know there were six Real Madrid players in the XI, neither do I care.

“They play for the Spanish national team, that’s it. They don’t play for one team or another. Our base is from Real Madrid and it looks good to me.”

The next international break will see Spain play a British duo, first travelling to Wales in a friendly before welcoming England in the Uefa Nations League.

The breakdown of Luis Enrique’s first Spain squad

Given Enrique’s past as Barcelona manager, many had expected the Blaugrana to form a big part of the Spain squad as they have done so for years.

But only Sergio Busquets and Sergi Roberto represented the La Liga champions, with Real Madrid boasting the most on six.

Behind Madrid were Chelsea, who had four players in, followed by Valencia and Atletico Madrid on two with seven other teams having one player included.
