Former Arsenal player Paul Merson believes Chelsea have no chance of winning the Premier League title.
The Sky pundit gave a scathing review of the way the team defend, saying he cannot see them winning the league “one bit” unless something changes.
The Blues finished last season a massive 30 points behind champions Manchester City and Maurizio Sarri was brought in to implement a change of style that made his previous club, Napoli, so strong in Serie A last season.
Chelsea have won their first four games of the new season, including a thrilling 3-2 victory over Unai Emery’s Arsenal, but Merson is not convinced that the team have a strong enough defensive unit to compete for a title.
”I’m a Chelsea fan and I cannot see them winning the league one bit,” he told Sky Sports as reported by the Metro.
“I think, attacking wise, they are great. But that back four, I don’t think they can win the league with that back four.
“David Luiz will do something. He needs to be playing in a back three in my opinion. You only have to look at the Newcastle game.
‘They’re cruising and only he knows what he was doing when he went to the head ball. He just waited for it, I don’t know what he was trying to do.
“[Marcos] Alonso plays where he wants to play, he’s got no position, he just goes and plays. When they play against the big boys, they’ll get picked off.
“There’s a lot of work to be done even though it’s a great start. If Chelsea finish in the top four, I think they’ve had a great season.”
Chelsea have kept two clean sheets in their opening four games and, apart from the two goals they conceded against Arsenal, they have only been breached at the back one other time in the league, away at St James Park where they beat Newcastle 2-1.
They face newly promoted Cardiff City next as they look to continue their perfect start to the Premier League campaign.
