Arsenal can’t afford to let Welbeck leave next summer – Wright

Arsenal legend Ian Wright says his former club must not lose Danny Welbeck at the end of this season.

The 27-year-old forward swapped boyhood club Manchester United for north London in September 2014 and sees his current deal at the Emirates Stadium run out in June 2019.

Presently the Mancunian-born striker has been predominantly coming off the bench under Gunners boss Unai Emery but according to Wright it’s an invaluable role and his performances are worthy of an extension.

“Yes, I certainly do,” he said when asked if Welbeck deserves a new contract (via Mirror Sport).

“Where he is right now, behind [Alexandre] Lacazette and [Pierre-Emerick] Aubameyang, coming off the bench with his experience.

“And the fact that he is capable of scoring goals against all types of opposition. He’s someone that I think Arsenal should definitely try to sign up for the long term. He’s valuable to Arsenal.

“I think he’s got eight to 10 goals in him over the course of a season. In the current climate, I don’t think Arsenal can afford to let someone like that go.”

Since becoming a Gunner the 42-time capped England international has made no fewer than 119 appearances whilst registering 31 goals and 14 assists in the process.

A spate of knee injuries, though, significantly reduced his playing time under former boss Arsene Wenger.

When he’s played it hasn’t always been in a fixed position; to date, Welbeck has been used in a wide range of positions: winger, second striker, attacking midfielder and centre-forward.

So far this season he’s featured seven times under Emery bagging four goals.
