Sturridge is happy to be a squad player for Liverpool, says Carragher

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher believes Daniel Sturridge is content playing as a squad player at his former club.

The 29-year-old striker has been invaluable to the Reds of late having re-established himself in Jurgen Klopp’s first-team squad this season.

Sturridge spent the first half of 2018 on loan at West Brom and Carragher feels it was a turning point as he’s now less likely to rock the boat given Klopp’s front three is set in stone.

“With the front three we know Liverpool score goals,” he told Sky Sports.

“But the midfield three, certainly those playing at the moment, don’t get a lot of goals. So the back-up players when they come onto the pitch they’ve got to get goals.

“That’s what they’ve started doing and brilliant from Daniel Sturridge. I maybe had written the lad off too early in terms of his Liverpool career.

“I think going to West Brom was a big turning point for him. I think he came back realising ‘I’m happy to be a squad player at Liverpool’.”

Since joining from Chelsea in January 2013, Sturridge has featured across 140 matches for the Reds, managing 68 goals whilst creating 24 more.

The former Manchester City forward remains highly thought of among the Liverpool faithful.

However, he’s struggled with injuries, having been sidelined for a total of 567 days, missing a grand total of 99 matches.

This season, Sturridge has featured seven times across all competitions, managing four goals – with two of those coming in the Premier League – including his stunning equaliser at former club Chelsea.
