Atleti midfielder Saul Niguez rules out “unthinkable” Real Madrid move

Atletico Madrid midfielder Saul Niguez has ruled out a potential move to city rivals Real Madrid, calling it “unthinkable”.

The 23-year-old has become an integral part of Diego Simeone’s side over the past few years and, despite the intense rivalry between the two clubs, has been consistently linked with a move across the city to Real Madrid.

However, speaking prior to the two team’s stalemate on Saturday night, Saul reaffirmed his allegiance to Los Colchoneros.

“Joining Real Madrid would for me be unthinkable… it would be very, very difficult, almost impossible,” Saul told Cadena Ser’s El Larguero programme (via Football Espana).

“On Saturday there is no favourite, the only thing we can know for sure is that it will be a beautiful game.

“We are a team who are growing and it’s natural that we are exposed to criticism because of this profile, but we do not want to be compared to Madrid or Barcelona.”

“We are working to reach this level of course, and I believe at least six Atletico players would be starters in Madrid’s team, but we need to remain level-headed.”

Atleti haven’t enjoyed the most convincing start to the new season, despite sitting fourth in the La Liga table, but Saul isn’t worried about his side’s form, and also thinks that teammate Antoine Griezmann deserves this year’s Ballon d’Or title.

The 12-time Spanish international added: “Any side can have bad results, you always know that Sevilla can put you in trouble and Leganes may be a smaller club but you can see what they can do.

“Antoine Griezmann? He is a serious candidate for the Ballon d’Or and he would be my bet for the prize.”

Atleti’s next game is at home to Club Brugge in the Champions League on Wednesday night, when Simeone’s side will be looking to build on their opening win against Monaco.
