Belgium manager Roberto Martinez believes Axel Witsel joining Borussia Dortmund is the signing of the season.
The 29-year-old midfielder ended an 18-month association with Chinese Super League outfit Tianjin Quanjian when he joined the Bundesliga giants for a reported €20 million (£18m) in the summer.
Witsel’s assimilation under Lucien Favre has been seamless and his national team boss feels what he offers in relation to his price tag makes him the standout purchase of the summer transfer window.
“The best transfer in the world this season is Axel Witsel to Borussia Dortmund. He is the best investment in European football. What he brings to the team for a relatively small transfer fee of €20 million makes him the best signing of this transfer period,” Martinez told Sport Bild.
“Dortmund deserve tremendous recognition for the signing of Axel. He had gone under the radar in China. I knew he would prevail.”
Witsel in Dortmund
So far Witsel has been used 10 times in all competitions under Favre with seven of those appearances coming in the Bundesliga.
The versatile midfielder, who can play in a defensive or attacking role, has contributed with two goals across 759 minutes of playing time.
He’s completed the full 90 minutes on seven occasions, including his last two league outings, whilst being near-present for Belgium following their World Cup run to the semi-final.
Witsel’s next appearance under Martinez will see him collect his 100th international cap.
