“Chelsea defender Andreas Christensen would cost too much for Gladbach”

Borussia Monchengladbach have denied they are currently thinking about signing Chelsea defender Andreas Christensen.

The German side have said the “topic is not currently on” as to whether they should make a move for the Danish international.

There have been suggestions the defender is unhappy with the lack of first team chances this season at Stamford Bridge and may look for a move elsewhere, a fact confirmed by his father last week.

This had sparked rumours that he may be a target of Monchengladbach where he played on loan for two straight seasons between 2015 and 2017.

Despite his supposed availability, the German side have been quick to cool rumours that he may join them in January.

“We’ve got an outstanding relationship with Andreas, but the topic is not currently on,” sporting director Max Eberl told Sky Sports Germany.

“We’ve got a top central defensive partnership, with Mathias Ginter and Nico Elvedi.”

Despite the player being publicly available, Gladbach are wary that Chelsea’s asking price could be at a value that makes a deal unrealistic.

“Although we have some money to spend, I’ve heard that Chelsea will only sell Andreas if they allow him to leave, and the amount they will ask for is very large,” he confirmed.

The Danish international did not even make the squad for the weekend’s clash with Manchester United which finished in a 2-2 draw.

In fact he is yet to play a single game in the Premier League this season under Maurizio Sarri with both of his two appearances coming in cup competitions.

The player was a significant part of the Chelsea squad under Antonio Conte last season, making 27 appearances in the Premier League.

This followed a two season stint with Gladbach in the Bundesliga where he made 82 appearances across the two seasons, winning the club’s ‘Player of the Year’ award for his exploits in the 2015/16 campaign.

He also has 20 international caps to his name and was part of the Denmark squad who played in the 2018 World Cup in Russia, where he made four appearances as the Danes went out in the Round of 16 to eventual finalists Croatia.
