Real Madrid legend Iker Casillas names the world’s two best goalkeepers right now

Former Real Madrid captain Iker Casillas believes Atletico Madrid‘s Jan Oblak and Barcelona‘s Marc-Andre ter Stegen are currently the two best goalkeepers in world football.

The Real legend was full of praise for two of the shot-stoppers from Los Blancos’ fiercest rivals, lauding the exploits of the ‘keepers, who have both enjoyed a fantastic few seasons between the sticks in Spain.

Casillas now plies his trade across the border in Portugal for Porto, where he has made 124 appearances across all competitions since relocating to the Estadio do Dragao in 2015.

Taking time to address fans, Casillas responded to a question posed by one of his followers on Twitter about which goalkeeper out of Ter Stegen or Oblak he preferred.

He wrote: “Honestly, analysing the current moments of the goalkeepers on a global level, I think they’re the two best.

“I mean, they’re having a sweet moment.”

Casillas further went on to talk about his future with the Spanish national team, for whom he has made 167 appearances since making his debut in 2000, and he refused to rule out a return to La Furia Roja.

He added: “Of course! I understand that Luis Enrique has his new ideas for this new stage but I have my hope to return!”

The 37-year-old will be in action when Porto travel to Russia to take on Lokomotiv Moscow in the Champions League on Wednesday.

Ter Stegen vs Oblak

During his career with Los Colchoneros, Oblak has conceded just 109 goals in 174 appearances for the club, while Ter Stegen has let in 143 in 153 matches for Barcelona, but how have the ‘keepers fared this season?

Oblak has only conceded five goals this campaign – the fewest of any goalkeeper in La Liga to have played at least five matches – compared to Ter Stegen who has let in double, with 10.

The Slovenian has also made 4.8 saves per goal conceded compared to the German’s 2.4, and also has a 100% claim success record.

Meanwhile, Ter Stegen has enjoyed a much better goal kick success rate of 79.2% compared to Oblak’s 42.5% and has a better distribution accuracy with 83.4% to 44.2%.
