‘Diego Costa is actually one of the nicest guys in football’ – John Terry

Atletico Madrid forward Diego Costa is one of the ‘nicest guys in football’, according to former team-mate John Terry.

Costa has made somewhat of a name for himself for his aggression and nastiness on the field, looking to stretch the laws of the game as far as they can go.

Terry played with Costa for three years at Chelsea, with the pair winning two Premier League titles and the League Cup, before both left the club last summer.

And, despite his on-pitch demeanour, Terry has admitted Costa is a completely different person when not playing football.

“I’ve got to say, with him, I think he’s got that kind of perception of being arrogant [but] he’s one of the nicest guys I’ve met in football,” Terry told Sky One’s A League of Their Own.

“On the field, absolute animal. In training, he’d kind of elbow you in training and look at you as if you go, ‘What have I done there?’

“But off the field, I have to say, one of the nicest fellas you could meet.”

Terry left Chelsea after 22 years in the summer of 2017, making more than 700 appearances for the club, winning five Premier League titles, five FA Cups, five League Cups, one Champions League and one Europe League.

The defender spent last season at Aston Villa before retiring earlier this month. He is now assistant manager at the Villans.

Diego Costa’s record at Chelsea

Signing for Chelsea in 2014 having made a name for himself with Atletico Madrid, Costa quickly endeared himself to his new fans.

The Spaniard scored 20 goals in 26 Premier League games in his debut season, helping the club to the title under Jose Mourinho.

But Costa was constantly linked with a move back to Atletico, dampening his relationship with both the club and new manager Antonio Conte during the 2016/17 season.

Told he was no longer part of Conte’s plans in the summer of 2017, despite firing the Stamford Bridge club to another title, Costa would officially leave Chelsea in January 2018, after 58 goals in 120 games.
