Edin Dzeko opens up on famous title-winning Sergio Aguero goal

Former Manchester City striker Edin Dzeko has discussed in detail what was going through his head when the club won their first title in 44 years in 2012.

Sergio Aguero scored in the last minute of the match which meant City beat Queens Park Rangers 3-2 and clinched the Premier League title from arch-rivals and city neighbours Manchester United.

The goal secured Aguero’s status as a City legend but it is also considered one of, if not the, most iconic Premier League goals of all-time.

Dzeko, who currently plays for Serie A side AS Roma, came on as a substitute in that nail-biting victory and has spoken in great detail regarding the events of the afternoon and how City’s despair finally turned into the greatest match and footballing moment in their history.

Speaking via the Players Tribune, Dzeko’s mindset is that the club went from death to life in a matter of minutes.

“We were dead,” said Dzeko.

“That’s all I was thinking while watching that game from the bench.

“It gets to stoppage time, and I think we get five added minutes. If you play football on your PlayStation and you are losing 2–1 after 91 minutes, you never get the win. It’s finished. Go ahead and try it right now. Impossible.

“Then, the corner. David Silva took it. I scored that goal — header straight down the middle at 91:20. You can see me scream, ‘Come on, come on!’ to everyone as I’m running back to the centre circle. Still two, three minutes to play. Maybe we’re not dead yet?

“Then you know the rest. I don’t know how we did it. There was definitely someone from up there who gave us the chance to survive. People ask me all the time about Aguero’s goal, and what it felt like to be on the pitch.

“To be honest with you, the strongest emotion was just relief. You cannot imagine how relieved I was when that goal went in. We worked the whole season with such a great team and performed so well, and we were a few seconds from losing it all.

“City’s first title in 44 years, won like that? Crazy. That game showed me that in football and in life, you can never give up. If you give up, you are the dead man. We were dead, and we came from nowhere.”

Manchester City’s Premier League defence

The reigning Premier League champions are currently top of the league having won six and drawn one of their opening seven games so far.

Wolverhampton Wanderers are the only side to have taken a point of the Citizens this season, with City scoring a league-high 21 goals and conceding a league-low three goals to date.

Their next Premier League match is this Sunday against Liverpool which is already one of the most hotly anticipated fixtures of the campaign so far.
