Golden Boy shortlist reduced to 40 names with Liverpool’s Alexander-Arnold one of four Premier League players included

The nominees for the 2018 Golden Boy award were announced on Monday, with Liverpool right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold one of four Premier League players to be included.

PSG star Kylian Mbappe won last year’s award and has been nominated again. He would become the first ever two-time winner of the Golden Boy award if he was to secure it again this year. All nominees must be under the age of 21 – or born in 1998 or later.

The prize was established by Italian media outlet Tuttosport in 2003, with the winner decided by 30 football journalists from across Europe.

Wayne Rooney, Lionel Messi, Paul Pogba and Raheem Sterling are among the players to have won the award previously.

Mbappe is favourite to take the award again after a remarkable year for both club and country, but the likes of Borussia Dortmund’s Christian Pulisic and Ajax’s Matthijs de Ligt are also strong contenders.
