Europe’s top scorer Piatek privy to Barcelona links

Genoa striker Krzysztof Piatek claims he’s heard that La Liga giants Barcelona are interested in signing him.

The Polish forward is currently the highest scoring player in Europe’s top divisions having scored 13 goals in eight appearances so far this season.

Piatek’s record-breaking start to the campaign saw him become the first player to score in the first seven matches of a Serie A season since Argentinian legend Gabriel Batistuta.

The 23-year old signed for Genoa from Polish side Cracovia in June for a fee in the region of €4m. His most impressive return in one game this season came in a Coppa Italia tie against Lecce in August, where he scored all four goals in a 4-0 victory for his side – three of which were thumping headers.

In an interview with DAZN, the Polish forward has revealed that he has heard Barcelona want to sign him.

“I have heard that Barcelona want to sign me, but I do not believe it,” Piatek said.

“I did very well last season and felt I needed to move on and I have only been here for two months helping my team, but who knows what the situation will be next year.”

The next Robert Lewandowski?

The promising striker was recently rewarded for his incredible early season form by being handed his senior international debut in Poland’s 1-1 draw with the Republic of Ireland in September.

He has been named in their latest squad to face Portugal and Italy in their upcoming UEFA Nations League fixtures and will compete with fellow strikers Robert Lewandowski – who he has of course been compared to – and Arkadiusz Milik for a starting place in Jerzy Brzeczek’s side.

He was named in Poland’s 35-man preliminary squad for this summers World Cup but failed to make the final cut.

Despite his form in front of goal, Genoa have had a mixed start to the campaign and find themselves in 11th place in the Serie A table, having won four and lost three of their opening seven matches.
