Harry Redknapp believes John Terry is in the running for the vacant Aston Villa job but says Thierry Henry will not be taking up the post.
Villa are on the hunt for a new manager after sacking Steve Bruce who, despite guiding the club to last season’s play-off final, paid the price for a lacklustre start to the new Championship campaign.
Henry has been heavily linked with the job, as has Belgium coach Roberto Martinez, and there has been talk of Terry assisting Henry at Villa Park – Terry announced his retirement from playing just four days after Bruce’s exit, stirring plenty of speculation.
But according to Redknapp, Henry and Martinez are set to stay with Belgium, and Terry is more likely to be appointed by Villa.
“I don’t think Thierry’s going to go there,” Redknapp told talkSPORT. “I don’t think that’s going to happen, that’s what I’ve heard.
“I was at a function last night and John Terry was there, and I had a feeling John was right in the frame for the Villa job. He’s certainly a runner, that’s for sure.
“John wants to get into management – he sees Frank [Lampard] doing it and sees Stevie Gerrard having a crack.
“John is a confident boy. He’s just retired from playing and he’s thinking about the future, and if the opportunity comes to manage a club like Aston Villa, that would be a dream job for him.
“It’s a big club, there’s great potential there and it would be a great start for him.”
A familiar face
Terry will be more than familiar with his surroundings if he is appointed. The former England captain made 36 appearances for Villa last season but left the club at the end of his one-year contract in the summer.
As Redknapp has alluded to, Terry could join his generation of England teammates by venturing into management. Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard have made impressive starts at Derby County and Rangers respectively.
Terry won five Premier League titles, five FA Cups and one Champions League trophy during a hugely successful playing career.
Villa take on Swansea City at home in the Championship in their first game after the international break.
