The Mourinho-Pogba feud has been exaggerated, says France boss

Didier Deschamps has said the ongoing feud between Jose Mourinho and Paul Pogba has been exaggerated, suggesting there is “no issue” between the pair.

There has been much focus on the relationship between Mourinho and Pogba at Manchester United this season as a result of a number of incidents picked up on by the media.

Mourinho stripped Pogba of the vice-captaincy ahead of United’s EFL Cup defeat to Derby County, and a disagreement between the manager and his player on the training pitch was caught on camera the next day.

But Deschamps believes the situation has been blown out of proportion, claiming Pogba looked back to his best in United’s 3-2 win over Newcastle United last weekend.

“I think it’s exaggerated,” Deschamps said (via Goal). “Maybe you didn’t watch their last game, because I witnessed a great Paul Pogba.

“I think Jose saw the same thing as me. Some things happened and I think that, like is often the case, we make a big deal of something that isn’t.

“It’s true that there are some facts and some may have jumped to certain conclusions. When I see how Paul behaves towards the situation at his club, some may say he’s done everything he could possibly do mentally and when it comes to his individual performances, to help the club.

“There is no issue with Paul. I don’t want to be mixed up with anything and to interfere with any player’s relationship with their coach.”

An uncertain future?

Pogba scored his tenth goal for France in the World Cup final against Croatia and has been a crucial part of the team under Deschamps.

But the perception of his relationship with Mourinho has led to rumours of a return to Juventus, something the Serie A champions moved to deny this week.

The 25-year-old has scored 19 goals in 98 appearances across all competitions for United since rejoining from Juventus.

France welcome Iceland to Paris for a friendly on Thursday before a UEFA Nations League meeting with Germany next week.
