I thought Leo Bonucci would end his career at AC Milan, says former club director

Former AC Milan sporting director Massimiliano Mirabelli expected Leonardo Bonucci to end his illustrious playing career with the Rossoneri.

The 31-year-old Italian centre-back completed a sensational transfer from Juventus to the Rossoneri for a reported £35.1m in 2017 and in the process became only the 11th player to represent all three of Italy’s big three clubs: Juventus, Milan and Inter.

However, his stay at the San Siro – which he has since labelled a mistake – lasted just one season as he completed a return to Turin this summer, which disappointed the man who acquired his signature a year prior.

“I can only say that with us, he was a great professional and a great man, a true champion, the first to arrive and the last to leave,” Mirabelli told Processo Di 7 Gold (via Calcio News 24).

“Did I expect him to stay for a year? No, we thought he would close his career at Milan.”

The 83-time capped Italian international would play no fewer than 51 times for Milan registering two goals and one assist from centre-back.

He would end his sole campaign, under former Italy teammate Gennaro Gattuso, trophyless and has since reunited with close pal and central defensive partner Giorgio Chiellini at Juve.

Milan take on Inter in the Derby di Milano this weekend.
