James Rodriguez has been accused by Lothar Matthaus of putting himself ahead of Bayern Munich.
The Colombian playmaker, 27, is currently in the second term of his two-year loan to the German champions, but has complained recently of a lack of game time under Niko Kovac.
Rodriguez has started just three matches this season and has struggled for consistency in his performances, with Bayern generally not as dominant as usual, currently sitting sixth, four points off the pacesetters Borussia Dortmund, a threat Rodriguez himself flagged up at the beginning of the season.
And now Matthaus, who played at the Bavarian club for 12 years in two spells and won 19 trophies in that time, believes Rodriguez has been selfish in his approach to playing at Bayern, placing his ego above the good of the team.
“Bayern have too many players only interested in themselves,” Matthaus said, in quotes cited by Spanish media, via Football Espana.
“He (James) is one of the players who place their individual importance above the club, then they complain when they are not playing enough.
“It is egotistical and it is disrespectful in respect to his Coach, his club and his teammates, he cannot react angrily because Kovac does not put his arm around him like Heynckes did.”
What did Rodriguez say?
Rodriguez is thought to be unhappy at Bayern due to a lack of appearances. Last week Bild reported (via Football Espana) that the Real Madrid loanee said in response to his diminishing role: “This is not Frankfurt”, in reference to the manager’s previous club.
The report goes on to state Kovac wasn’t present when Rodriguez said the outburst.
The midfielder has struck twice in three league games thus far for Bayern, while he has also notched an assist in his solitary Champions League appearance under Kovac.
More recently, the Colombian struck a wonder goal as his national team beat USA 4-2 away, perhaps reminding certain onlookers what he can do.
