Why Robert Lewandowski went public over Bayern Munich transfer row

Bayern Munich marksman Robert Lewandowski has declared his dissatisfaction with the club’s transfer policy but insists he is happy he remained at the Allianz Arena.

Lewandowski, 30, was a wanted man during the summer, and he made no secret of his eagerness to part ways with the club after feeling isolated by the board during a period of criticism and scrutiny last season.

Despite netting 41 goals in all competitions, and receiving the Kicker Torjägerkanone (the Bundesliga top goalscorer award) the Poland international came under fire last term and felt the club failed to adequately shield him from the widespread reprisal.

As such, the clinical finisher wanted out, and Real Madrid were tipped to sign Lewandowski – who generated significant funds following the sale of Cristiano Ronaldo – but a deal failed to transpire during the off-season.

Lewandowski has now revealed why he disclosed information about his transfer bust-up with the club, citing a “strange atmosphere” behind the scenes.

“There were some things at Bayern which I did not like and I wanted to talk about that,” he told Sportowe Fakty.

“When I realised, there was a strange atmosphere in the media and between the clubs, I decided to talk about it. I wanted to make a statement by saying: ‘If there are so many people who are not satisfied with me, I might as well leave’.

“Still I knew that Bayern’s answer would be: No, no and no. No matter what kind of offer was made.”

The Bavarians were adamant in their stance towards Lewandowski with the club reluctant to even entertain possible enquiries for their star striker, but the former Borussia Dortmund man insists he is happy to have stayed in Munich.

However, having turned 30 in August, Lewandowski still holds ambitions to play at the highest peak of continental football.

He added: “I can’t say I am disappointed. I am still at one of the best clubs in the world. Maybe Bayern’s popularity worldwide is a little lower than with other top clubs, but if I was not happy here I’d have a problem.

“I will still fight for the biggest goals. The season is long and we can play at the highest level. Even though there are currently many things which we need to improve.”

Lewandowski has made another scintillating start to the season despite Bayern’s recent woes, with the striker netting eight goals in 10 matches across all competitions.

Newly-appointed Niko Kovac is struggling to adapt to the demands of the club, where domestic dominance is par for the course, as Bayern sit sixth in the Bundesliga – they next face an away trip to Wolfsburg on Saturday, October 20.
