Klopp in awe of Wagner’s miracle work with Huddersfield

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has hailed David Wagner’s work at Huddersfield Town, dubbing it a ‘miracle’.

Wagner took over at the John Smith’s Stadium in November 2015 with Huddersfield then languishing in 21st in the Championship.

The German would guide the Terriers to winning the Championship play-off final in his second season, earning promotion to the Premier League.

And, according to Klopp, that task, as well as keeping Huddersfield up last season, were miracles.

“Getting promoted there, I use the words of a friend, is a miracle,” Klopp told reporters (via Goal).

“Staying in the league is a miracle, and now this year if he stays in the league then he has a hat-trick of miracles!”

Despite the back-to-back miracles achieved by Wagner, Huddersfield are currently struggling in the Premier League this season.

The Terriers are still awaiting their first win in the league, having drawn three and lost five of their opening eight matches.

And it does not get any easier as Wagner’s men take on Klopp’s Liverpool side on Saturday evening – with the Reds still unbeaten in the Premier League dropping just four points so far.

David Wagner’s two miracles

Going into the 2016/17 Championship campaign, Huddersfield had been mentioned as one of the contenders to be relegated from the division due to their poor finish the year before.

But Wagner’s style of play pushed the Terriers to a fifth-placed finish, with 25 wins, six draws and 15 defeats. Wins over Sheffield Wednesday and Reading in the play-offs secured Huddersfield’s place in the Premier League – a first for the club.

Once again tipped for relegation in the Premier League last season, Huddersfield did well to prove their doubters wrong finishing four points clear of the drop – with safety achieved following a 1-1 draw with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
