Kylian Mbappe has the game to win the Ballon d’Or this year and in the future, according to French teammate Blaise Matuidi.
The Juventus midfielder was heaping praise on his club and national teammate, who is still just 19. Mbappe is among the nominees for this year’s award, and Matuidi feels the youngster has the ability already to win football’s most coveted prize.
Mbappe won the treble with PSG last season and was named ‘Best Young Player’ at the tournament as France won their second World Cup.
And Matuidi hopes his national teammate will receive the highest accolade in world football.
“He’s among the nominees so he can win. He’s shown that he is a great player despite his young age,” he told a news conference, via Goal.
“What he shows on the pitch is very impressive. We also see it in training. We are very happy to work with him.
“I’m not going to give favourites because I don’t want to have enemies in the group. May the best man win.
“But Mbappe has everything to win the Ballon d’Or this year or in the future.”
Matuidi was crucial to Didier Deschamps’ World Cup-winning France side, invariably providing flexibility in the centre of the park or across the width of the pitch as the manager sought balance with a midfield featuring the likes of Paul Pogba and N’Golo Kante.
The former Monaco starlet, meanwhile, has scored 31 goals in 51 games for PSG, and struck four times for France in Russia.
It remains to be seen whether the 19-year-old will take the Ballon d’Or.
