Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa explains £1.9m donation to his former club

Leeds United boss Marcelo Bielsa has donated a reported £1.9m to former club Newell’s Old Boys.

A boyhood Newell’s Old Boys fan, Bielsa began both his playing and managerial career at the club and led them to the 1991 Argentine Primera Division Apertura and the 1992 Clausura.

And now the 63-year-old has donated the money, which has helped the club to build a brand new training facility, to be opened next month.

However, according to the BBC, Bielsa has insisted that the money is simply him paying a debt back to the club for everything they have given to his career, rather than a gift.

“They are the club that formed me. I received more than what I gave to them. I’m paying a debt to them, not giving them a gift,” he said.

“The infrastructures of the institution help the team to prepare well. Two things are important for a team, the quality of the players and the quality of the preparation they receive.”

Bielsa’s start at Leeds United

Bielsa has made a strong start to life at Leeds since arriving at Elland Road in the summer, guiding his side to third in the Championship and losing just one of their opening 12 games so far.

He has largely achieved this with the same group of players that under performed last season making the fast start even more impressive.

The Argentine has seen his side win six league games, drawing five, although they did crash out of the League Cup with a 2-0 home defeat to Preston North End in the second round.

Leeds’ next game is away to Blackburn Rovers on Saturday.
