Daniele Rugani: Chelsea made a “very strong push” to sign me from Juventus

Chelsea made a ‘very strong push’ to sign Daniele Rugani from Juventus, according to the player’s agent.

The Italian international has only made one appearance for the Italian champions this season after suffering a rib injury in their 2-0 victory over Frosinone in September.

Rugani has also managed just 55 Serie A appearances for the Old Lady since making his debut the club in 2015, with the 24-year-old struggling to dislodge Giorgio Chiellini, Leonardo Bonucci and Andrea Barzagli during his time in Turin.

But now his agent, Davide Torchia, has admitted that his client could have been plying his trade in the Premier League this season, with Chelsea making a big summer push for the defender.

“Chelsea made a very strong push to negotiate, Juve evaluated it, but the player never asked to leave,” Torchia told RMC Sport radio (via Football 365).

“His objective was to earn his place in the starting XI. Juve believed in the player and we’ll discuss it during the contract renewal talks.

“It expires in 2021, so there is no urgency, but we cannot wait too long either.”

With David Luiz and Antonio Rudiger performing so well for Chelsea this season – the Blues have only conceded five goals in eight league games this season – it is unclear whether Maurizio Sarri will make another move for Rugani in January.

However, the new Chelsea boss has worked with Rugani before when the defender spent two years under Sarri during a loan spell with Empoli between 2013 and 2015.

Sarri’s Chelsea side host Manchester United on Saturday, while Juventus face Genoa later the same day.
