Manchester City v Liverpool: a thriller between two side at the top of the Premier League.

The only two teams many expected to be fighting for the title this season are currently top and second after seven games, both unbeaten with six wins and one draw to date.

City have the slight lead in the table thanks to a superior goal difference with 21 goals scored to Liverpool’s 15 as both sides have conceded just three across their seven league matches.

Both sides have shown some signs of weakness in the Champions League in recent weeks, with City losing in their first game to Lyon and Liverpool tasting defeat last time out against Napoli.

But in the Premier League the two are the teams to beat, and going head-to-head at Anfield on Sunday could go some way in showing fans the likely destination of the title come the end of the season.

Team news: What do Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola have to say?

Liverpool played a full-strength team during the midweek defeat to Napoli, with only Jordan Henderson losing his spot from the starting XI in the draw against Chelsea last weekend. Naby Keita was the man to replace him but had to be taken off early due to injury, but Jurgen Klopp has admitted there is still a chance he could feature against City.

Klopp told reporters: “He had a back spasm and so we have to wait a little bit. He will be in today. If he can do something on the training ground, I don’t know.

“Tomorrow, we have to decide. It didn’t look too serious so there’s a chance, but we don’t know.”

And although Man City manager Pep Guardiola revealed Fabian Delph is out for the trip to Anfield and Ilkay Gundogan a doubt, the Spaniard refused to be drawn on speculation Kevin De Bruyne could make his return following a knee injury.

“We will see tomorrow,” he told reporters. “He’s training with us, yeah.”

These comments, despite their briefness, sent fans into furore at the thoughts of the Belgian’s return.

It was even suggested the team news update was an attempt made by Guardiola to get inside Klopp’s head with the Spaniard looking to get an edge of the manager who beat him three times last season.

Liverpool v Manchester City predicted starting XIs

With Naby Keita a doubt, Klopp is likely to return to the starting XI he used to face Chelsea at Stamford Bridge last week, one which did well to come from behind and earn a point in the face of defeat.

This season, Liverpool’s back five pick themselves having conceded just three goals in seven Premier League games so far – with the defence keeping four clean sheets in the process.

And, as always, the front three will rarely change unless forced, and with no injuries reported there would be no reason for Klopp to change them especially in what will be a vital game.

Predicted Liverpool formation vs Man City (4-3-3):

Possible XI: Alisson; Trent Alexander-Arnold, Joe Gomez, Virgil van Dijk, Andy Robertson; Georginio Wijnaldum, Jordan Henderson, James Milner; Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino, Mohamed Salah

Despite the speculation over the return of De Bruyne to the City squad, Guardiola is unlikely to start him unless he truly has to, so as no to risk it being too soon.

Benjamin Mendy was another doubt for the game against Liverpool but will be more likely to start than De Bruyne, especially considering his start to the season and the reports of him being left out for disciplinary reasons rather than having a serious knock.

The biggest question for City, injuries aside, would be who starts up front. Will it be Aguero alongside Sterling? Will Jesus get his start ahead of the Argentine, or will the South American pair start together?

Predicted Newcastle formation vs Man Utd (3-1-4-2):

Possible XI: Ederson; Nicolas Otamendi, Vincent Kompany, Aymeric Laporte; Fernandinho; Kyle Walker, David Silva, Bernardo Silva, Benjamin Mendy; Sergio Aguero, Raheem Sterling

Head-to-head records and pre-match stats

Liverpool and Manchester City have played each other 210 times in their history, of which the Reds have won 104 games while City have come out on top on 54 occasions, with 52 draws. The last time these two sides met came in the 2018 Champions League quarter-finals, with Liverpool winning the second leg 2-1 at Anfield to advance 5-1 on aggregate.

On current form, however, these two sides are hard to separate with both having won six and drawn one of their opening seven Premier League games so far – with only goal difference keeping them apart as it stands.

Between them, the pair have scored 36 goals in the Premier League this season, with City having the edge on 21 – at an average of three per game.

Both sides have been equally as impressive in defence too, conceding just three goals each and keeping four clean sheets. City scoring 21 goals has not been an accident, with Guardiola’s side (118) creating more chances than any other in the Premier League this season – Liverpool sit fourth in that regard on 77.

Squawka score prediction:

With the pair having almost identical records in the Premier League this season, Liverpool v Manchester City is a tough one to call. But Liverpool have looked shaky of late, going three games without a win in all competitions, while City have grown of late and we predict they will continue to push this weekend.

Prediction: Liverpool 1-2 Manchester City
