Man Utd 3-2 Newcastle: Every player rated as Mourinho’s side complete a dramatic comeback at Old Trafford

Manchester United mount a dramatic comeback to defeat Newcastle United 3-2 at Old Trafford.

It looked like the final nail had been hammered into Jose Mourinho’s coffin this afternoon as the beleaguered coach saw his side concede two goals in the first ten minutes – the first time this had ever happened to the Red Devils in a Premier League game.

Goals from Yoshinori Muto fired the visitors ahead in what was shaping up to be a miserable evening for the Old Trafford faithful. The Magpies could have extended their lead further as they saw more clear cut chances go begging.

Football really is a game of two halves, however, as United returned from the break to put in their most impresive performance of the season. The Red Devils peppered Newcastle’s penalty area with wave after wave of attacks before Juan Mata was able to get one back with a superbly taken free-kick.

Anthony Martial then got off the mark for the first time this season with a great effort aided by compatriot Paul Pogba. Then Alexis Sanchez, who hasn’t had a great start to this campaign, clinched the winner at the death, potentially saving his boss’ bacon – for another week at least.

Here are the rating from Saturday’s epic clash at Old Trafford.

Manchester United Player Ratings

David de Gea – 6 – Couldn’t do much to prevent the Magpies’ first two goals. Pulled off a sensational stop from close range to deny Muto his second.

Chis Smalling – 4 – Looked uncomfortable all afternoon, which wasn’t helped by having his defensive partner replaced after 19 minutes.

Eric Bailly – 4 – Only played 19 minutes but looked just as uncomfortable and disorganised as Smalling when on the pitch.

Ashley Young – 5 – Young was culpable for both of Newcastle’s first-half strikes. He was rounded by Kenedy, spun by Muto and could have conceded a penalty when he handled Shelvey’s free kick. Made up for it slightly with a much improved second half and he assisted Sanchez for the winner.

Luke Shaw – 5 – Found himself out of position for many of Newcastle’s counter-attacks. He did make some positive moves going forward, but his crosses left much to be admired, often falling short or trailing behind their intended targets. Booked.

Scot McTominay – 3 – The Scot looked very uncomfortable as he filled in the space vacated by Eric Bailly in the first half. His touch was poor, some of his passes wayward and was unconvincing in defence.

Nemanja Matic – 4 – Was not his assured self in the first half and in the second he missed a sitter from close range. Gained more confidence as the game progressed and kept possession well.

Paul Pogba – 8 – Looked lost at sea in the first half. Commanded proceedings in the second and spearheaded most of United’s attacks. Set up Martial’s equaliser and rallied his side on to victory.

Anthony Martial – 8 – Most of his runs were stifled by Newcastle’s defence, but he was constantly looking to create chances for his side. His hard work paid off in the end after a delightful piece of interplay between him and Pogba set up a fantastic equaliser.

Marcus Rashford – 4 – Looked like a blunt instrument this evening. Sent two headers wide from close range, the first of which was an absolute sitter. His crossing continues to be a problem.

Romelu Lukaku – 7 – The Belgian got into some good positions and created some decent chances for teammates. Rashford should have finished off his sublime cross in the first half. His short passing game was ropey but was a consistent threat in the final third.

Substitutes

Juan Mata – 7 – (for Bailly 19) The Spaniard contributed to some positive attacking moves when he came on for Bailly. Scored a fantastic free kick.

Marouane Fellaini (for McTominay 45) – 6 – Was a target man for United in the box, but he was unable to have a significant effect on the game. Passed the ball well.

Alexis Sanchez (for Rashford 67) – 7 –The Chilean is still very far from the spectacular form he showed at the Emirates, but he had his moment this afternoon by snatching the winner and possibly saving Mourinho’s job for another week.

Newcastle United Player Ratings

Martin Dubravka – 6 – Before conceding three goals Dubravka looked comfortable on Newcastle’s goal line, collected the ball well, made some important punches and his distribution was solid.

DeAndre Yedlin – 6 – Was a fiery presence and coped well with Martial for most of the game – the perfect defender to keep back at corners – but couldn’t keep it up for the full 90.

Jamaal Lascelles – 6 – The 24-year-old coped well with United’s attacks, but along with his colleagues in defence was unable to withstand the Red Devils’ onslaught.

Federico Fernandez – 6 – Made some excellent challenges and recovered well after being rounded, but his efforts were not enough on the night.

Javier Manquillo – 7 – Supported Kenedy well on the left flank in the first half and contained Young well. He couldn’t repeat that feat in the second half as Young improved.

Matt Ritchie – 7 – Passed the ball well on Newcastle’s right flank and took advantage of United’s first-half frailties at the back in the first half. Spearheaded some quality counter attacks in the second.

Jonjo Shelvey – 8 – Newcastle’s best player. He distributed the ball well, grabbed an assist and made some excellent interventions, but he lost the battle in midfield in the second half as the Red Devils recovered from their first-half woes.

Mohamed Diame – 7 –Missed a sitter from close range, but distributed the ball well when he had it. booked.

Kenedy – 7 – The Brazilian scored his side’s opener with a well struck shot with his left foot after skilfully turning Young. Looked sharp all afternoon and was very aggressive going forward.

Ayoze Pérez – 7 – His interplay with Muto was excellent at times this afternoon. Assisted the Magpies’s second goal and was a threat all afternoon.

Yoshinori Muto – 7 – Started brightly and linked up well with Perez playing just behind him. Rounded Young well to grab Newcastle’s second. Should have had a brace, but was denied by De Gea at close range.

Substitutes

Jacob Murphy – 5 – (for Kenedy 68) Made no impact on the game.

Christian Atsu – NA – (for Muto 78) late sub

Joselu (for Perez 88) – NA – late sub.
