Marouane Fellaini reveals what Jose Mourinho said to Man Utd players at HT v Newcastle

Jose Mourinho told his Manchester United players to ‘be men’ during his half-time team talk that preceded their 3-2 comeback win against Newcastle United, according to Marouane Fellaini.

The Red Devils were trailing to two early Newcastle goals in Saturday’s clash at Old Trafford and, in truth, could have been even further behind had the Magpies been more clinical.

However, a Juan Mata free kick, followed by strikes from Anthony Martial and Alexis Sanchez, saw Man United complete a remarkable second-half comeback that gives Mourinho some much-needed breathing space.

And, following the game, Fellaini, who was brought on at halftime, has said that Mourinho asked his players to show their mettle in the second half to dig out a result.

“I think the first half was a difficult moment for us,’ Fellaini told BT Sport (via Metro). ‘Everybody was frustrated in the dressing room, but we ranked well, we were more aggressive, more direct and forward, we created a lot of chances.

“The manager asked us to be men, to not be afraid, to go and play. And that’s what we did in the second half.”

José Mourinho is the only manager in Manchester United's history with a win percentage above 60%.

Meanwhile, left-back Luke Shaw thinks Man United’s second-half performance was more like the ‘old United’ while also commenting on the ‘strong team spirit’ among Mourinho’s players.

“At half-time, I’m sure there were a lot of happy people around the world watching that and loving every single moment of it, but the team spirit is very strong here,” he said (via the Guardian). “The half-time team talk was very strong but it was really needed and gave us a kick up the backside.

“We came out different. The way we played in the second half was much quicker, much more direct, more like the United you saw in the old days and we need to do that more, we will hopefully, and now we just look forward to our next games.”

Next up for United is a trip to Stamford Bridge after the international break, before they host Juventus in their third Champions League group stage game.
