Real Madrid are strongly opposed to the idea of La Liga games being played overseas, according to a leaked letter.
A plan for Barcelona’s match against Girona to be played in Miami was proposed earlier this year by La Liga president Javier Tebas in a move which could see more Spanish top-flight games being played overseas in the future.
But in a letter reportedly signed by Real Madrid’s general manager, Jose Angel Sanchez Perianez, the club is in complete opposition to La Liga matches being played anywhere but Spain.
The letter was published by Spanish radio station Cadena Ser on Tuesday.
Real Madrid oppose “surprising” request
Madrid claim they have not been consulted about overseas games and so cannot authorise the proposition. They also question the intentions behind La Liga’s idea.
“[It is] surprising that such a request comes from [those] who should maintain a position of exquisite impartiality,” the letter reads.
Madrid have also revealed their foreign supporters’ groups, who initially backed the idea of overseas matches, are now supportive of the club’s stance.
Barcelona have already played Girona at the Nou Camp in La Liga this season, drawing 2-2 last month.
The Catalan giants are set to travel to Girona for the reverse fixture on January 27, unless La Liga’s proposal for the game to take place in Miami goes through.
