Bad news for Arsenal? Barcelona confirm January departure that could deal Emery transfer blow

Barcelona have reached an agreement with Sevilla to sell 23-year-old Munir El Haddadi in a move that could mean bad news for Unai Emery and Arsenal.

Munir made his debut for the Catalan giants when he was 18, scoring against Elche before going on to win the league twice, the Copa del Rey twice and a Champions League.

Is Munir’s Barcelona exit bad news for Arsenal? Five key things to know…

  1. Arsenal have identified Barcelona midfielder Denis Suarez as one of their primary targets.
  2. Emery has made it clear, however, that Arsenal can only sign players on loan.
  3. On the other hand, Barcelona are only willing to let Suarez leave on a permanent deal.
  4. Munir’s departure means that Valverde’s squad is now thinner, reducing the likelihood Suarez will leave.
  5. With rumours of Aaron Ramsey moving on to Juventus this month, Emery needs to find a solution in this window.

Valverde has been clear that Arsenal target Denis Suarez still has a future at the club, despite only clocking 17 minutes of La Liga action this season, utilised mainly in the Copa del Rey.

“Denis is in a different position to Munir, because Denis can play for us in any match and he is always available.”

“The reality is he was with our squad when we went to Getafe on Sunday and he is always competing to be in the squad, so yes he does have a future.”

“This is a period of the season when fixtures come thick and fast and we will need to make rotations, I am aware of this and so are the players.”

“Every game now we believe there will be a few changes, between league fixtures and those in the Copa all players available have a chance.”

Valverde has told reporters that even his stars Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez will need time to rest. If Suarez will be used to add depth to the squad, it seems less likely that he will leave for the London side.

Arsenal looking for options

Arsenal have been criticized for their handling of Aaron Ramsey in the wake of his likely departure to Juventus. The news that Emery will only be able to bring players in on loan came as a shock to many.

He said, “We cannot sign permanently, We can only loan players. Only loan players.”

“I can say to you that the club is working, the club is telling me the different situations in each moment. At the moment, we haven’t had any news today about that.”

Although Barcelona are looking for £20m for the player, Arsenal seem to be working on a deal that could feature a clause to buy at the end of the loan, likely to be short-term season-long.

“I don’t know his situation now. We can only sign players later on. I know the club is working on possibilities of which players can help us with big performances like we need now.”

With a big FA Cup tie at the end of the month following a London derby against Chelsea, Emery will be eager to get some players in. Of Suarez’s ability to step up, he is confident, “I know this player and he’s a very good player. I cannot tell you more.”
