Chelsea target would be worth £50m to solve their goalscoring problems

Dion Dublin believes Bournemouth striker Callum Wilson is worth £50m to Chelsea as he can make them a better side.

The 26-year-old English marksman is enjoying a productive season under Eddie Howe and has, of late, been heavily associated with a move to Stamford Bridge.

Will Chelsea shell out for Wilson? Five key things to know…

  1. Wilson has been near ever-present for Bournemouth this season having missed just one of their opening 21 league outings.
  2. Across his 20 appearances for the Cherries he’s bagged nine goals which is one more than his efforts from last season.
  3. To put that in some perspective only Harry Kane (14), Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (14), Mohamed Salah (13), Eden Hazard (10) and Sergio Agüero (10) have been more prolific.
  4. As a result, the forward has been heavily linked with a move to Chelsea who are enduring problems with their own strikers.
  5. And Dion Dublin believes Wilson is worth the £50m Chelsea would have to spend on him, for all he would bring to the club.

Chelsea – the lowest scorers of the Premier League’s top six clubs – are expected to address their striking options this month.

Dublin, who previously represented Wilson’s boyhood club Coventry City, can totally understand the reported interest and feels he’s worth everything penny suggested.

“Yes, he is [a £50m player],” he told BBC Radio 5 live.

“Wilson has all the attributes to make them [Chelsea] a better side going forward, he is a more out-and-out forward than what they have at present.

“Morata seems to have a soft underbelly, he likes a tap-in but does not really like to go through the pain barrier to score goals.

“I do like Giroud, he is a very good centre-forward. He does not get the number that people expect but as a centre-forward, and as a team player, I have a lot of admiration for him.”

Chelsea’s struggles

As mentioned the Blues haven’t been the sharpest in front of goal this season. Although they’ve returned 38 goals across their opening 21 matches, which is more than 14 sides, it nonetheless leaves them as the lowest scorers inside the top six.

Manchester City (56) lead the way followed by Liverpool (49), Tottenham Hotspur (46), Arsenal (46) and then Manchester United (43).

Eden Hazard, as he was last season, is Chelsea’s leading scorer. He’s guaranteed a starting berth, often playing as a false nine, unlike the more traditional centre-forward options of Alvaro Morata and Olivier Giroud.

Morata is likely to leave this month with Atlético Madrid strongly linked meaning a potential spot for Wilson or Gonzalo Higuaín who is currently enjoying a season-long loan at AC Milan from Serie A powerhouse Juventus.
