Full player ratings: Man Utd's 8/10 star punishes Spurs' biggest flop

Manchester United passed the first real test of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s reign with a 1-0 victory over Tottenham at Wembley.

Marcus Rashford’s first-half strike proved to be decisive as the Red Devils climbed to within six points of the top four.

The hosts looked leggy, having faced Chelsea in midweek, while United played with the attacking swagger their fanbase has been crying out for.

David de Gea produced heroics to keep his side in the game while Spurs were left to rue some uncharacteristically poor finishing as they missed the chance to climb into second place in the table.

Here are Squawka’s player ratings from United’s crucial win over Spurs:

Spurs

Hugo Lloris– 7 – He was caught flat footed by Rashford’s crisp finish but produced a string of superb second-half saves to keep his side in the game.

Kieran Trippier – 4 – A delicious early delivery appeared to set the tone for a good display, but he was guilty of some sloppy passing and at fault for the opener.

Toby Alderweireld – 6 – Comfortably the most composed Spurs defender in possession. Would have been celebrating a crucial goal were it not for De Gea’s brilliance.

Jan Vertonghen – 5 – The Belgian was making his return from injury – and it showed. He appeared to be half a yard off the pace; a recipe for disaster given the speed in United’s attack.

Ben Davies – 5 – The Welshman was not on the same wavelength as Vertonghen and Spurs were often vulnerable down his side of the pitch.

Harry Winks – 5 – Made some crucial penetrating runs but his shooting was rash and faded as the game wore on.

Moussa Sissoko – 5 – Provided valuable physicality in the centre of the park before being forced off with a groin injury.

Christian Eriksen – 6 – The Dane was tidy in possession as ever and saw much more of the ball after a formation tweak at the break, but his decision making was a little off.

Dele Alli – 5 – Showed some nice touches and excelled driving into the final third from a deeper role but his finishing let him down. Booked for a cynical foul on Pogba.

Son Heung-min – 5 – Always a bright spark in possession, but lacked a clinical edge in the final third. The South Korean’s dynamism will be a big miss during his spell away on international duty.

Harry Kane – 5 – Hardly had a touch in the opening half an hour and his Midas touch in front of goal deserted him. Fell short of the ridiculously high standard he sets himself.

Substitutes:

Erik Lamela – 5 – (for Sissoko 42) His introduction led to a Spurs reshuffle, with the Argentine deployed at the tip of the diamond.

Fernando Llorente – 5 – (for Winks 80) Little impact on the big occasion – as usual.

Man Utd

David de Gea – 8 – A spectator for much of the first half, the Spaniard was in inspired form after the break. He simply would not be beaten.

Ashley Young – 6 – It is always seen as a worry when Young is deployed at right-back, but he shackled Son and was a composed presence throughout.

Victor Lindelof – 6 – Marked his 50th appearance for United with a confident display that epitomised the progress he has made since a shaky start to life in English football.

Phil Jones – 6 – Struggled to cope with Son’s movement early on but grew into the game and clearly enjoyed clocking up another clean sheet.

Luke Shaw – 6 – Enjoyed a lively, exciting battle with countryman Trippier – and got the better of him.

Ander Herrera – 6 – The Spaniard made several crucial blocks and ensured Spurs could not dictate proceedings. Booked for a late challenge on Eriksen.

Nemanja Matic – 6 – Pragmatic if not picturesque, the Serbian shored things up as things became stretched.

Jesse Lingard – 7 – The forward’s composure failed him when he snatched at an early chance but produced some neat touches in transition.

Paul Pogba – 7 – Chased lost causes consistently and his effort could not be faulted. Produced a sumptuous pass to set up Rashford. Booked for a lunge on Alli.

Anthony Martial – 6 – Direct running caused plenty of problems and a clash with Trippier highlighted the renewed fire in his belly.

Marcus Rashford – 8 –  Fielded up top and always looked to stretch the play. A decisive, drilled finish across Lloris was delivered by a man high on confidence.

Substitutes:

Lukaku – 5 – (for Martial 72) Helped to provide an out ball and see out the game.

Dalot – 5 – (for Lingard 83) Little time to make an impression.

McTominay – n/a – (for Pogba 91)
