Leroy Sane says Liverpool will be aware of how much pressure they are under after Manchester City’s 2-1 win over the Reds on Thursday.
A Liverpool win at the Etihad would have seen Jurgen Klopp’s men take a 10-point lead at the top of the Premier League, but goals from Sane and Sergio Aguero consigned the Merseyside outfit to a first league defeat of the season.
Can Liverpool hold off City to win a first Premier League title? Five key things to know…
- Liverpool went unbeaten in the opening 20 games of the Premier League season.
- That run was ended on Thursday, with the Reds going down 2-1 at title rivals Manchester City.
- The result reduced Liverpool’s lead to just four points at the top of the table.
- Jurgen Klopp is looking to deliver Liverpool’s first league title since 1990.
- Leroy Sane believes City’s win puts real pressure on the Merseyside club, who will now ‘have to keep up’.
That result means City have now reduced Liverpool’s lead at the Premier League summit to just four points with 17 games remaining.
And following the game, Sane insisted that the pressure is firmly on Liverpool now, saying the title race is now ‘a little bit more interesting’.
“We have put more pressure on Liverpool. We’re just four points behind them – and they know it, too,” Sane, according to Sky Sports, told reporters.
“They have to keep up, but we also have to keep up. It’s now a little bit more interesting.
“It was really important to win a game at home against Liverpool. It gives you more confidence to know we are closer and it’s not over already.”

Sane hails Liverpool as world’s best despite Etihad defeat
Despite their 2-1 win, Man City had to work incredibly hard to take all three points against Liverpool on Thursday, surrendering 50.4% of possession and only making seven more passes (468) than Liverpool’s 461.
And the intensity of the clash has not been lost on Sane.
The German emulating Pep Guardiola to hail Liverpool as a potential candidate for the best team in the world at the moment.
“It was really tense,” he added. “You could see in every tackle, every pass, that everyone was really focused on the game. One wrong pass, one mistake, and you get really punished.
Leroy Sane has scored four Premier League goals against Liverpool, against no other side has he netted more.
