Tottenham Hotspur Mauricio Pochettino says Christian Eriksen is free to decide his own future but hopes to fend off interest from Real Madrid and Barcelona for the Denmark international.
Eriksen has made 250 appearances for Spurs since arriving from Ajax in 2013 but with his current deal due to expire in 2020, there has been growing speculation regarding the 26-year-old’s future.
Will Christian Eriksen leave Spurs? Five key things to know…
- Christian Eriksen has made 250 appearances for Spurs since joining the club in 2013.
- Only Ryan Fraser and Eden Hazard (nine) have provided more Premier League assists than Eriksen (seven) this season.
- However, the Denmark international’s contract is due to expire in 2020.
- This has led to reported interest from Spanish giants Real Madrid and Barcelona.
- Pochettino admits he would like Eriksen to remain at the club, but says the midfielder will decide his own future.
And although he is hoping to keep Eriksen in north London, Spurs boss Pochettino admits that the midfielder will be the one to decide his own future.
When asked for an update on Eriksen’s situation, Pochettino responded: “I am not a person that suffers too much in this type of situation.
“Football is dynamic, Christian Eriksen is so important for Tottenham. You would like to have this type of player with you.
“It’s [a new contract] a negotiation, it will be fantastic if he will commit to the club. It would be fantastic if he commits long term but he has every right to do what he wants.
“He is happy here, he is showing his commitment. Then what is going to happen between him and the club is not only in our hands.”
What does Pochettino expect from the January transfer window?
Tottenham were the only Premier League club not to sign any players in the summer transfer window, while the departure of Son Heung-Min to the Asian Cup with South Korea leaves Pochettino’s squad very light on the ground heading into a very busy January.
However, the Argentine has dismissed any talk of Spurs making signings based on Son going on international duty, maintaining he will only sign players that would be good business to the club or a genuine addition to his squad.
“No, it is true that we are disappointed with that situation with Sonny, but we are not going to take a decision based on that,” he responded when asked about Son’s absence.
“We are only going to take a decision if all the things are in a very good position that is going to improve our squad, or is going to be good business for the club. If not, impossible.”
Tottenham beat Tranmere Rovers 7-0 in the FA Cup on Friday.
