Solskjaer thinks Man Utd already have their own potential Harry Kane

Manchester United caretaker manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer believes Marcus Rashford can match Spurs striker Harry Kane.

Solskjaer has won all of his five games in charge at Old Trafford since replacing Jose Mourinho, who was sacked in December.

Can Rashford match Kane? Five key things to know…

  1. Marcus Rashford made his first-team debut in 2016 under Louis van Gaal and scored a brace on his debut in the Premier League.
  2. When Harry Kane was 21, he finished the season with four goals in 19 appearances.
  3. Rashford became a first-team player at United at 18, three years quicker than Kane at Spurs.
  4. Rashford has scored as many goals in four league games under Solskjaer (3) as he did in his previous 14 under Mourinho.
  5. Rashford has much to do to match Kane, who has already scored 159 career goals.

Speaking ahead of United’s crucial clash against Tottenham on Sunday the Norwegian discussed the talents of Marcus Rashford who has enjoyed a new lease of life at the heart of United’s attack since he joined the club.

When asked about how Rashford compares to Kane, Solskjaer said that the 20-year-old can match the Spurs forward.

“We can talk about Harry Kane and his class. Marcus has the potential to get up there also,” the Norwegian told the BBC.

“He is very exciting to work with and can become a top, top striker. He’s got frightening pace. He’s become stronger and can hold the ball up for us,” added the former United striker.

The Wythenshawe born forward has a lot of catching up to do if he wants to match the Spurs forward this season. The 21-year-old has scored six Premier League goals, eight fewer than Kane.

United play Spurs on Sunday at Wembley.

Solskjaer v Pochettino: winner takes all?

United’s trip to Wembley has been cited, ever since the Norwegian took over at Old Trafford, as the game that may decide if he remains in charge at the end of the season. His opposite number in the Spurs dugout has been linked with Solskjaer’s gig ever since Louis van Gaal left the club in 2016. The Argentine was reportedly a favourite of Sir Alex Ferguson, but the Scot was overruled by United’s board who were swayed by Mourinho’s more impressive curriculum vitae.

With Fergie back on the scene a move could be back on for Pochettino at the end of the season. However, Solskjaer probably has other plans. The Norwegian has shied away from announcing his ambition to move to Old Trafford for the long term, but there’s no denying the longing look in his eyes whenever he’s asked the question.

Arsenal’s capitulation against West Ham means Solskjaer will be even more determined to keep his side’s foot firmly pressed on the gas on Sunday, and in the back of his mind, he’ll know that victory at Wembley will start to convince his employers that he’s the right choice come May.
