Former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has revealed the one quality that both Patrick Vieira and Thierry Henry must have to ensure they become successful football managers.
Wenger – who left Arsenal at the end of last season after spending 22 years at the club – brought both players into the club in the early days of his Gunners tenure.
Both Henry and Vieira will forever be remembered as Arsenal legends and as two of the best players to have graced the Premier League.
Now both retired, the two Frenchman are eyeing up managerial success, with Wenger offering them both advice on what he believes the two players need to succeed.
Speaking to French publication RTL, Wenger explained that merely having the intelligence to manage and the desire to improve isn’t enough. Instead, management must become an obsession that takes over your life and involves necessary sacrifice.
Wenger said: “Often, I’m asked if Thierry Henry and Patrick Vieira will be good managers and I always answer yes.
“They have all the qualities; they’re intelligent, they know football, they have excellent skillsets, but do they want to sacrifice what needs to be sacrificed? It’s an obsession which bounces around your head day and night.
“You wake up at 3 am thinking about team selection, tactics, formation…”
Vieira at Nice, Henry has quit Sky Sports
Both Viera and Henry are already taking their first steps towards managerial stardom.
Vieira is further along the line having been involved in coaching since retiring back in 2011. Having progressed through the Manchester City set-up as both the reserve team and Elite Development squad manager, Vieira made the trip to the United States to manage MLS side New York City FC starting his official managerial career in 2016.
Vieira’s time in the US saw some steady progress and under his leadership, NYCFC’s standing in the game grew season upon season.
This led Ligue 1 side Nice to offer Vieira a chance to return to his native country and attempt to manage a side in one of the top leagues in Europe. Unable to decline the offer, Vieira starts his new chapter in France this season with many hoping that the former Gunners captain continues to improve.
In contrast, Henry’s route into the coaching world took a slightly less generic route, with the Frenchman opting to start his career outside of playing football in the studios of Sky Sports as a television pundit.
With his style, intelligence and articulation praised, it was thought that Henry’s venture into management may have come to a standstill.
That was until newly appointed Belgium manager Roberto Martinez offered him the chance to join the coaching team within the Belgian national team.
Following a successful World Cup – which saw Belgium finish third after losing out to Henry’s native country France in the semi-finals – Henry had clearly enjoyed the process enough to quit his role on Sky Sports and concentrate all of his efforts in succeeding as a manager.
What happens next, waits to be seen.
