What new Arsenal signings can we expect to see?
A number of Atletico’s new signings will be on show in the International Champions Cup this summer, including defensive midfielder Rodri and goalkeeper Antonio Adán. Thomas Lemar and Antoine Griezmann will now take a break after winning the World Cup with France. As will be the case with the likes of Diego Godin and other World Cup participants.
Arsenal have been fairly active in the transfer market so far this season, and will be bringing the likes of new signings Bernd Leno, Sokratis Papastathopoulos and Matteo Guendouzi with them on their tour. Stephan Lichtsteiner, signed from Juventus on a free transfer and £26m arrival Lucas Torreira, who will not return till early August, from Sampdoria will take a break following their World Cup campaigns. The latest to join up with the travelling Arsenal squad are Mesut Ozil and Mohamed Elneny.
Meanwhile this new-look Arsenal will be without Gunner mainstays Jack Wilshere, who recently signed with West Ham, and Santi Cazorla, who was allowed to leave for Villareal on a free transfer.
Arsenal boss Unai Emery, who oversaw his first pre-season friendly in an 8-0 win over Boreham Wood last weekend, has only a few games to judge his players and work out a means of playing before the Premier League begins in August. Next up is Atletico Madrid v Arsenal.
Atletico Madrid v Arsenal: head-to-head records and pre-match stats
The two sides have played just twice so there is little in the way of Atletico Madrid v Arsenal stats; the only occasions on which they’ve faced off was last season when they drew in the first leg and the Spanish side won in the second leg of their Europa League semi-final.
Arsenal beat Boreham Wood 8-0 on July 14, while the Spanish side are yet to play a pre-season friendly yet.
Arsenal will be hoping to get back into the Champions League at the third time of asking. Unai Emery’s men can do this through league positioning, probably the preferred route, or via a Europa League triumph. As last season showed, the latter isn’t impossible.
Moreover Arsenal will be seeking another cup win, though it’s likely less of an importance following Arsenal’s recent successes in the FA Cup – a top-four spot and possibly even better will be of paramount importance to the fanbase and club hierarchy.
For Atletico, the sky is the limit, though what they are and aren’t capable of will hinge rather drastically on the future of Antoine Griezmann. If the Frenchman leaves for Barcelona, or elsewhere, and isn’t somehow replaced, Atletico will be unlikely to challenge for the La Liga title or in any other competition.
Even so, a strong showing in the league, mixed with cup and European success will be the expectation at the Wanda Metropolitano.
