Sadio Mane named Liverpool’s new No.10 seven months on from Coutinho sale

Sadio Mane has been given the No.10 shirt at Liverpool, seven months after Philippe Coutinho left for Barcelona

Coutinho had been Liverpool’s No.10 but now the jersey, formerly worn by the likes of Michael Owen, John Barnes and Andriy Voronin, will now be adorned by Senegalese international Sadio Mane.

This means Liverpool’s devastating attacking trident of Roberto Firmino, Mane and Mohamed Salah will wear the numbers 9, 10, and 11 respectively.

Mane, 26, scored 10 and assisted seven goals last season in the Premier League in what was initially a slower start than previous seasons.

The Senegalese ultimately played a crucial role in helping co-stars Firmino and particularly, Salah, hurt opponents with his speed and threat.

Salah scored 32 in 36 league games and 44 in 52 games in all competitions.

However Mane scored important goals of his own last term, scoring twice across the Roma semi-final legs and again in the Champions League final defeat to Real Madrid.

The news of the number change for Mane comes off the back of news that Liverpool signed Brazilian goalkeeper Alisson from Roma for £65m.

Liverpool have now spent over £250m in the past year, with the perception and expectation at the club and further afield that Liverpool have the tools and evident financial muscle to challenge Man City at the top of English football.

The Reds start their domestic season against West Ham at home on August 12.
