Bayern Munich president launches scathing attack on Mesut Ozil

Bayern Munich president Uli Hoeness has come out with scathing criticism of Mesut Ozil after the midfielder decided to stop playing for Germany.

The Arsenal forward has ended his career with the German national side after he received what he has described as “racist” abuse from certain sections of the German press and FA (DFB).

The criticism stems from a photo featuring Ozil and Turkish president Recep Erdogan before the World Cup, when the Turkish ruler was on a visit to a charity event in London.

Ozil was born in Germany but has Turkish ancestry, and has denied that the photo was politically motivated.

Not all Germans are disappointed by Ozil’s decision, however, with Bayern president Uli Hoeness instead slamming the player.

“I’m glad it is over. He’s been playing dirt for years,” said the former West Germany international, via Sky Sports.

“He last won a tackle before the 2014 World Cup. And now he hides himself and his c*** performance behind this photo.

“His 35 million follower boys, who of course do not exist in the real world, think he has played excellently if he plays a cross to a man.”

Ozil was one of the players to underperform at the World Cup in Russia as the Germans suffered a shock exit at the group stage after losing 2-0 in their final game against South Korea.

Hoeness went on to say that his side target the 29-year-old when Bayern play Arsenal because they see him as a weak link.

“Whenever we played against Arsenal, we played over him, because we know he’s the weak point”, he said.

Ozil has struggled in matches against the German giants, only having won two of his 17 meetings with them.

Did Mesut Ozil really have a bad World Cup?

Hoeness has criticised Ozil for how he played at the World Cup in Russia, a tournament in which the Arsenal man was dropped for the second game, but is the Bayern president being unfair?

Ozil may not have scored but he was one of the most creative players in the group stages setting up 11 chances. No player at the World Cup created more chances in the group matches.

He also created plenty of opportunities for his teammates during the decisive 2-0 defeat to South Korea, with a total seven chances created by the Arsenal man, showing that perhaps some of the criticism is unwarranted.
