According to La Liga president Javier Tebas, Cristiano Ronaldo left Real Madrid due to the country’s higher tax rate.
Cristiano Ronaldo made headlines world-wide when he left Real Madrid after nine years to sign for Serie A champions Juventus for €100m.
The player broke several records during his time in Spain and is Real Madrid’s highest ever goalscorer, but according to La Liga’s president, the move was motivated by more than just the player seeking a new challenge.
Javier Tabas believes the financial incentives of a Italy’s lower tax rate was the true reason the Portuguese star left for pastures new.
“Ronaldo will earn more money in Italy than here (in Spain) so we are at a disadvantage,” Tebas told an interview with Marca.
“It is a problem for us because it restricts us from competing in an international market, as players will make more in net in other countries than they do here.
“Spain is the worst of all the big leagues for tax purposes, as the players are losing big sums of money compared to elsewhere.
“We must question this because it is penalising us on what we have the potential to do.”
Spain’s top tax bracket sits at 52% compared to the 46% in Italy meaning players can earn a lot more in Serie A, but Ronaldo cited needing a new opportunity as the reason for heading to Turin.

The move saw Juventus’ share price rocket and is considered to be the signing of the century by many in the Italian media, as Serie A have often lost out to La Liga and the English Premier Leagues for top signings in recent years.
Juventus will be hoping that the addition of Ronaldo can help them win the Champions League trophy that has eluded them over the last few years despite finishing runners-up in the competition in both 2015 and 2017.
