Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge has confirmed his wishes to stay at the club and fight for a place in the starting XI this season.
Sturridge, 28, has struggled for game time and form at the club due to numerous injury problems which have seen him play just 63 times in all competitions since Jurgen Klopp took charge in October 2015.
The forward spent the second half of last season on loan at West Bromwich Albion to try and restart his career but made just six appearances due to further injury problems.
But now, after being part of the Reds’ squad during pre-season, Sturridge is focused on a starting place for Liverpool amid links away from the club.
“I see myself staying at Liverpool, hopefully being part of the team week in, week out,” Sturridge said, as reported by Daily Mirror.
“Pre-season is going well, so for me it’s keeping my head down and building on that. I’m excited about the season ahead at it feels great to be back.”
On Liverpool’s pre-season so far, Sturridge added: “Pre-season has started well for me and the team.
“We have the tour to come where we face some great teams like Manchester United, Manchester City and Borussia Dortmund.
“I’m feeling great and can’t wait to get the season under way.”
Sturridge has played in all three of Liverpool’s pre-season friendlies so far, against Chester, Tranmere Rovers and Bury, scoring two in a 7-0 win over the former.
Though the Englishman will have a hard task breaking into the Liverpool side come the start of the Premier League season with their front three of Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino having performed so spectacularly last term.
Sturridge’s Liverpool career so far
Signed from Chelsea in January 2013, Sturridge hit the ground running at Anfield building a good partnership with Luis Suarez dubbed ‘SAS’.
In his first full season, 2013/14, the forward scored 22 goals in 29 Premier League games as Liverpool went agonisingly close to winning the title only for an unfortunate slip from Steven Gerrard against Chelsea and capitulation to Crystal Palace to stop them.
But that would be the height of his Liverpool spell to date, with the forward struggling for injuries, playing 55 games in the following four seasons and managing 17 goals.
