Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has urged World Cup-winning midfielder Paul Pogba to understand how he succeeded for France.
Pogba played all but one game in France’s run to the World Cup final, with Les Bleus winning all the games the midfielder played in, including the final 4-2 against Croatia.
The 25-year-old scored once in the tournament, France’s third in the final as they took control of the game to win their second World Cup after 1998.
And Mourinho, who oversaw Pogba’s return to United in 2016, hopes the Frenchman will understand why he was “very good” in the tournament.
“To win the World Cup can only be a positive,” he told a press conference (via the Manchester Evening News).
“It is difficult to say winning the World Cup is not good for a player’s career, I can only imagine it will only be positive.
“I hope he understands why he was very good, that’s the point, for him to understand why he was so good especially in the second part of the competition.”
Pogba’s United return
Joining United in 2016 for a then-world record fee of £89m, Pogba has not enjoyed the best return to Old Trafford with the Frenchman drawing some criticism for his performances.
But the midfielder did enjoy a good past season with the club, creating 49 chances in the Premier League. Only Juan Mata (56) managed more among United’s players.
Pogba did, however, finish as United’s top assister with 10 – the only player at the club to hit double figures, while also scoring six goals – putting him second in terms of direct goal contributions, behind only Romelu Lukaku (16 goals, seven assists).
And now, after proving his doubters wrong at the World Cup, Pogba will no doubt enter the new season with even more confidence in his own ability as well as a World Cup winners’ medal.
