Ander Herrera has backed Manchester United teammate David de Gea to prove his critics wrong.
The 27-year-old Spanish goalkeeper endured a difficult World Cup campaign, shipping in six goals across four matches as La Roja were dumped out in the round of 16 by hosts Russia, which subsequently led to vocal criticism.
Herrera, nonetheless, feels despite making some uncharacteristic mistakes, De Gea will prove his worth as one of the world’s best in the forthcoming season.
“I remember that difficult summer when everyone was talking about Real Madrid and he played the first game at Old Trafford and everyone was singing his name and he told me ‘this is amazing, they are the best’,” he told reporters (via Goal).
“He can be very calm but he’s the best. He will show it again. He’s the best keeper I’ve ever seen in my life and he is with us so we have more chances to win titles.”
De Gea’s future
De Gea, whose present deal at United expires in June 2019, has been continuously linked with a transfer back to his native city, but there are no plans for him to leave Manchester anytime soon.
As an instrumental figure at “The Theatre of Dreams”, he is currently one of United’s longest-serving players, and has made 315 appearances for United to date.
Throughout this time he has kept 118 clean sheets while only conceding 310 goals (once every 91.6 minutes).
His exemplary performances – which have helped the Red Devils lift the Premier League in 2013 as well as the FA Cup (2016), League Cup (2017) and Europa League (2017) – have seen many consider him as Europe’s best ‘keeper.
