Dries Mertens joked that Belgium team-mate Michy Batshuayi is a “stupid guy” after a ball rebounded onto his face when the forward kicked it onto a goal post at close range.
Batshuayi’s viral gaffe occurred during celebrations of Adnan Januzaj’s goal, which secured Belgium’s 1-0 victory over England last Thursday night.
The Chelsea forward addressed the mishap on Twitter, writing:”Ahahha I knew I would be f***** the minute I come to my mentions. Why am I so stupid bro. S*** hurts.”

And Batshuayi’s teammates also joined in with the torrent of ridicule directed at the Chelsea striker on social media.
“He [Batshuayi] is a bit of a stupid guy, we like to joke with him,” Mertens told a news conference , according to Goal.
“I think he is very funny on social media and everything and I don’t know if he did it for extra followers or something.
“But it was really funny.”
Match-winner Januzaj also chimed in on the fun:”I think he [Batshuayi] wanted to score also!”
“But unfortunately for him he hit the post, but then he scored a header which was nice. But yeah, it was a funny celebration to see.”
While Batshuayi succeeded in making an impact on his own face he failed to make one on the game against England and will not have done enough to usurp first-choice striker Romelu Lukaku, as the Man Utd talisman has scored four goals in two games in Russia.
Belgium’s next game is against Japan on Monday while the Three Lions play Colombia on Tuesday.
