Chelsea forward Pedro believes his new manager Maurizio Sarri has a similar mentality to Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola.
Pedro played under Guardiola for four years at Barcelona, featuring 167 times across all competitions before the manager’s departure at the end of the 2011/12 season.
Sarri recently replaced Antonio Conte as Chelsea manager with the club looking to return to the top four of the Premier League and reclaim a spot in the Champions League.
And Pedro is ready to work hard under his new boss, who shares some similarities with current Man City manager Guardiola.
“It is early,” he told reporters, via the Daily Mail, ahead of Chelsea’s first pre-season friendly against Perth Glory.
“It is good, these ideas, it will take time. It is the start of the pre-season. Now we have this test against Perth, then Inter Milan and Arsenal.
“The coach is very motivating. A really good, honest coach. I knew of him and what he did at Napoli. I was not close with him but he is a very good coach with very good ideas.
“When he arrived he was very good with the players, speaking a lot and really, really hammering on the pitch his ideas. It is a very big change for the players.”
When asked about Guardiola and Sarri, Pedro added: “They are similar. Their intensity, mentality. It is good. It will be an open game for the duration and very good to watch.
“The most important thing is to try really hard and take the manager’s ideas in our mind very quickly. It is very important to do this, to test this. Maybe with these players, we can do these ideas.”
Pedro scored the only goal of Sarri’s first game in charge, as the Blues beat Perth Glory 1-0 at the Optus Stadium in Perth.
Pedro’s Chelsea career so far
Signed in 2015 from Barcelona, Pedro endured a tough first season at Chelsea as the team faltered in the Premier League, finishing 10th.
But under Antonio Conte the Spaniard’s fortunes improved as he became a big part of the squad which won the league in 2016/17.
Playing 131 games in total for the Blues, Pedro has scored 28 goals and recorded 20 assists, and with Willian’s future in doubt, the Spaniard may find himself a consistent starter on Sarri’s right wing.
